Job Title: TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT - ELA INSTRUCTIONAL COACH

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) - English Language Arts (ELA) Instructional Coach’s role is to provide differentiated support and professional development to teachers regarding instructional practices that will positively impact student achievement. The role of the coach is to build teacher capacity in the following areas: effective instructional practices, knowledge of the English Language Arts Common Core Standards, common formative and summative assessments, and expertise in analyzing data driven instruction and decision making. The ELA Instructional Coach provides support for teachers and school leaders in the areas of literacy curriculum and instruction. The ELA Instructional Coach will need to be reflective, have strong effective communication skills, explore ideas, think deeply and critically, practice new ideas, provide feedback, assist with implementation challenges, and transform learning. The ELA Instructional Coach works collaboratively with members of the instructional staff, building, and district administrators. The ELA Instructional Coach reports to the Assistant Superintendent or designee and does not supervise any employees.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaches, co- teaches and models/demonstrates literacy lessons using the district’s curriculum framework
  • Coaches teachers to apply most effective teaching tools, skills and attitudes to increase student engagement, to support a standards-based learning environment and to increase student academic achievement across the content areas
  • Develops and delivers professional development to staff in regards to best strategies for teaching literacy concepts and practices
  • Assists teachers in utilizing a variety of on-going, instructionally based assessment approaches to inform and differentiate instruction
  • Supports building administrators in the use of data to identify instructional strategies that will foster improvement in student achievement 
  • Assists classified personnel to support teachers and students when using literacy materials and strategies
  • Helps maintain instructional cohesiveness in school environments and across the district
  • Provides constructive feedback to teachers regarding their approach to instruction
  • Engages in professional teaching and learning that empowers and respects the voices of all colleagues
  • Available for consult with parents, students, administrators, and peers outside the school day, as needed
  • Performs duties as needed to provide quality literacy instruction to all students and to meet all state and federal requirements

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Maintains consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position
  • Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving information or sharing information and expertise with students, colleagues and parents/guardians
  • Manages time and resources appropriately
  • Confers regularly with other licensed staff and immediate supervisor
  • Performs other duties as assigned



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS  

Education and Experience Required

  • BA/BS or higher degree (required) with a major in one or more of the following areas: Curriculum, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, ELA, Reading or similar area. Masters preferred.
  • Experience in the following areas preferred: Explicit Reading Instruction, Systematic Literacy, ECRI, HD Word, Kendore, RTI, GLAD (K-4), Constructing Meaning (5-12), Instructional Coaching, Effective Teaching Strategies, Formative Assessment, Data Teams, Instructional Technology, AVID, etc.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework and appropriate instructional subjects

  • Ability to motivate, facilitate and support teachers in the area of ELA
  • Demonstrates command of oral and written English language
  • Ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers
  • Follows all District policies, work procedures and requests by proper authority
  • Manages time and resources appropriately
  • Completes paperwork accurately and verifies and correctly enters data
  • Averts problem situations and intervenes to resolve conflicts
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others

 

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required

  • Holds an appropriate license from Teacher Standards and Practices Commission in the State of Oregon and endorsement(s) in English Language Arts, Reading or Multiple Subjects Self-Contained.
