Position: Student Safety Coordinator

Salary: Up to $80,000 commensurate with experience
Overview of the position:
The Student Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the security and emergency preparedness of the Forest Grove School District. This role emphasizes the importance of creating and maintaining systems that enhance equitable student outcomes and establish safe, welcoming environments for all. The coordinator works collaboratively with District leadership, staff, and external agencies, including consultant, engineering, and law enforcement partners, to design, implement, manage, train, and troubleshoot District safety systems and emergency protocols. Reporting to the Superintendent or designee, this position does not supervise any employees.
Essential responsibilities:
- Lead safety efforts aligned with the District's Strategic Plan, focusing on implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct and update comprehensive evaluations of District security systems, ensuring they meet evolving needs and equity standards.
- Design, manage, and maintain the District's Public Safety systems to ensure equity-driven safety outcomes, including situational awareness, resource management, and notifications for first responders.
- Provide training for designated staff on the proper use and management of public safety systems and emergency protocols to create safe and welcoming school environments.
- Engage District staff and stakeholders in planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining security systems that promote safe and welcoming environments.
- Review and provide feedback on consultant proposals and contractor bids for security-related projects. Inspect consultant and contractor work quality to ensure compliance with district standards.
- Collaborate with the technology department on the operation of security systems, ensuring proper maintenance, repair, and functionality.
- Create the structures for and support the development and continuous improvement of building-specific emergency plans.
- Attend and support facilitation of district safety committee meetings.
- Monitor safety drills and logs across all District facilities, ensuring compliance and readiness.
- Collaborate with the Forest Grove Police Department (FGPD) and Forest Grove Fire Department (FGFD) to support District-wide safety efforts.
- Collaborate with regional and state peers to ensure current practices and systems.
- Participate in regional, state, and national training events to ensure current practices and systems.
- Understanding of State laws regarding school security and emergency protocols for scenarios such as earthquakes, active shooter events, fires, and natural disasters.
- Maintain confidentiality standards regarding sensitive student, staff, or District information.
- Perform additional duties consistent with role, as assigned.
Education and Licensure:
- High School diploma or equivalent, bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of seven (7) years experience working with adults or adolescents.
- A minimum of three (3) years experience in law enforcement or equivalent security experience.
- Comprehensive expertise in all areas of security systems and public safety systems.
- Emotional intelligence and proven skill in public relations, customer service expertise, and conflict negotiation.
- Communicating change processes, addressing concerns, and managing readiness to ensure smooth adoption of new practices within the school.
- Knowledge and experience in working with other races, ethnicities, and cultures within a community.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Spanish bilingual and bicultural skills and abilities.
